Your local underground pipe leak detection experts

Underground pipe leak detection for supply lines and mains running under lawns, driveways, paving and concrete. The pipe run is mapped first and the leak is pinpointed on it, so the excavation happens over the fault instead of along the whole line.

We detect hidden leaks buried underground

Two jobs happen here, and they are separate. The first is locating the pipe itself, because very few properties have accurate records of where a supply line actually runs and assuming it goes in a straight line from the meter to the house is how driveways get opened up for nothing. Pipe and cable locators trace the run and mark it on the surface. The second is finding the fault on that run. Acoustic correlators placed at two points on the line measure the tiny difference in when the leak noise reaches each one and calculate the distance to the source from that. On plastic pipe, which carries sound poorly, tracer gas is pushed through the line and picked up where it works its way to the surface. What gets marked is a point, not a trench.

Who this service is for?

Properties where the loss has been confirmed at the meter but nothing inside the building accounts for it. It suits larger blocks, rural supply runs, commercial sites and any property where the pipe passes under a hard surface that would be expensive to open speculatively.

Commonly asked questions

Only over the leak, and only once it has been marked. Locating the pipe run and pinpointing the fault happens entirely from the surface. The excavation that follows is sized to the repair rather than to the search, which on a concrete driveway is the difference between one cut section and a replaced slab.

On metal pipe under reasonable conditions, correlation typically narrows a leak to within a small radius of its actual position. Accuracy drops on plastic pipe, on very deep lines and where traffic noise or a high water table interferes, which is when tracer gas is used instead. The report marks the confidence as well as the position.

It depends which side of the meter the leak sits on. Everything from the meter to the property is generally the owner’s responsibility, and the network side belongs to the water authority. Establishing that first matters, because a wet verge is not automatically a job the owner has to pay for and detection can settle the question before anyone starts digging.
