Your local swimming pool leak detection experts

Swimming pool leak detection for a pool or spa losing more water than evaporation explains. The shell, the skimmer, the returns, the light housings and the buried circulation lines are all candidates, and each one is checked and ruled out rather than guessed at.

Determining if there is a leak in your swimming pool

The first question is whether the loss is in the shell or in the plumbing, because those are two completely different repairs. A bucket test settles the evaporation question. A bucket of pool water is set on a step so the inside and outside levels start equal, and after a day or two the pool losing more than the bucket confirms a real leak rather than a hot week. From there the circulation lines are pressure tested one at a time, which isolates a failed suction or return line without touching the shell. If the lines hold, the shell is the problem, and dye testing at the skimmer throat, the light housing, the returns and any visible cracking finds where water is drawing through. Listening equipment picks up flow in buried lines that pressure testing has flagged.

Who this service is for

Pool and spa owners watching the level drop and the water bill climb, and anyone told a pool needs reshelling before the plumbing has been tested. It also covers pre-purchase checks, where knowing whether a pool leaks changes the number worth paying for the property.

Commonly asked questions

Evaporation alone typically accounts for a few millimetres a day, more through a hot dry windy stretch and less in cool still weather. A pool dropping noticeably faster than that, or one needing the hose run every few days through mild weather, is losing water somewhere else. The bucket test is the cheapest way to confirm it before anyone is called.

No, and emptying it can cause its own problems. A pool drained in wet ground or high water table can lift or crack from hydrostatic pressure, which turns a leak into a structural repair. Detection is done with the pool full, using pressure testing on the lines and dye testing on the shell.

It usually can. Water settling at the skimmer mouth and stopping points to the skimmer or its throat. Settling at the light and stopping points to the light housing or its conduit. A pool that keeps dropping past every fitting suggests the shell or a line under constant pressure. It narrows things down, though it still has to be confirmed.
